A fascinating route through a unique place, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2011: the Benedictine monastery of San Salvatore – Santa Giulia, founded by the last Lombard king Desiderius, which became the City Museum in 1998. A tour that becomes a real voyage through time, the walk in the various sections of the museum crosses through several centuries of history in one go. The route begins in the Roman section, among frescoes and gilded bronzes, arriving at the sensational Domus dell’Ortaglia and the majestic mosaic floor from the Via San Rocchino. The tour continues in the Basilica of San Salvatore, the heart of the monastic complex, with its crypt, a thousand-year-old site of great spirituality, and the extraordinary, entirely frescoed, Choir of the Nuns, ending in the Romanesque Oratory of Santa Maria in Solario to admire the priceless Croce di Desiderio (Cross of Desiderius), which is adorned with precious gemstones, positioned beneath a lapis lazuli blue sky and studded with golden stars.
