Anita Garibaldi’s Dress

L’esposizione dell’abito di Anita Garibaldi, concesso in prestito dai Musei Nazionali della Repubblica di San Marino, costituisce un’occasione rilevante e peculiare entro il programma che Fondazione Brescia Musei ha dedicato alla figura di Giuseppe Garibaldi, indagandola attraverso molteplici prospettive e analizzandone il ruolo storico, la fortuna nelle arti visive, il culto materiale e la memoria pubblica. Oltre la storia. lcona, mito, racconto, la narrazione si espande e si concentra ora sulla straordinaria figura di Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro, nota come Anita Garibaldi, attraverso l’esposizione dell’abito da lei lasciato nel luglio del 1849 a San Marino durante la drammatica ritirata verso Venezia, intrapresa dopa la caduta della Repubblica Romana. L’indumento ha la capacita di evocare, attraverso la suggestione della testimonianza materiale, quella donna coraggiosa, la cui esistenza è diventata simbolo di partecipazione attiva e di intensa dedizione civile. L’oggetto permette di raccontare l’epopea garibaldina offrendo uno scorcio intimo su aspetti umani e quotidiani, come la commovente solidarietà che Anita ricevette dalle comunità locali durante la sua fuga.

After the fall of the Roman Republic in July 1849, Anita Garibaldi followed Giuseppe Garibaldi in the difficult retreat toward Venice. Exhausted, pregnant, and worn out by the journey, she found refuge in Cetona, where the women of the town made her a new silk dress and offered it to her on behalf of the entire female community. The dress accompanied Anita as far as San Marino, where on 31 July, preparing to set off again, she exchanged it in the shop of the haberdasher Teresa Simoncini for a simpler garment more suitable for the escape. Remaining in San Marino, the dress was kept by the Simoncini family and soon became an object of patriotic veneration. It began a long exhibition “pilgrimage”: from the Risorgimento exhibitions in Bologna (1888) and Ravenna (1904) to the Garibaldian exhibition at La Scala in Milan (1917), where the original bodice also reappeared. Donated in 1949 by the Martelli family to the State Museums of San Marino, at a time when the collection of Garibaldian memorabilia was being formed, the dress became a true secular relic, symbol of Anita’s memory and of her central role in the Italian Risorgimento myth.
