Cristina Mittermeier. A Greater Wisdom

The retrospective La Grande Saggezza (The Great Wisdom) — offering free admission due to the social and moral relevance of the themes presented— features over 80 photographs that reveal the significant research and work of the Mexican photographer, marine biologist, and activist. Over the years, she has celebrated the beauty of our planet, from its landscapes and ever-evolving wildlife to the diverse cultures and traditions of peoples living in symbiosis with nature.
At a historical moment marked by the climate emergency and the increasing fragility of environmental balances, The Great Wisdom invites the public to recognize nature as a heritage of knowledge built over millions of years of evolution.

The “wisdom” evoked by the title is that of ecosystems — their capacity for adaptation, cooperation, and regeneration — but also that of the communities that still live in deep connection with natural environments today, safeguarding their traditional knowledge and respecting their rhythms. Through the narrative power of photography, Cristina Mittermeier takes visitors on a journey across remote worlds and surprisingly close landscapes, showing how every environment — from oceans to forests, and from ice caps to coastlines — is part of a single, interconnected system. Her images do not merely document the planet’s extraordinary beauty; they offer an urgent reflection on our collective responsibility to preserve the great wisdom that nature continues to offer us, which represents one of the most precious resources for facing the challenges of our time.

The exhibition is organized around three major themes—the underwater world, the terrestrial world, and tribal peoples—and translates into images the concept of “enoughness,” developed by Mittermeier herself. It offers an opportunity to reflect on contemporary lifestyles and the possibility of adopting a more sustainable and mindful approach toward the Earth, prompting us to question our role within the ecosystem and what it truly means to have “enough.”
