Brescia pays tribute to Joel Meyerowitz (New York, 1938), a leading figure in contemporary photography, with an extensive retrospective—the first comprehensive anthological exhibition ever organized in Italy. This landmark showcase spans six decades of his career, from the 1960s to the present day.

Curated by Denis Curti and organized by the Fondazione Brescia Musei, the exhibition stands out as the highlight of the 8th edition of the Brescia Photo Festival and is promoted by the Municipality of Brescia and Fondazione Brescia Musei, in collaboration with CAVALLERIZZA – centro della fotografia italiana.

Since the 1960s, Joel Meyerowitz has been celebrated as one of New York’s most captivating avant-garde photographers, his work developing in parallel with that of other legendary figures like Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, and Diane Arbus. The exhibition features over 90 images, arranged into thematic chapters, showcasing many of the works that helped redefine the concept of street photography. Joel Meyerowitz revolutionized the genre by incorporating colour, using it as a tool to fully interpret and convey the complexity of the modern world.

A special highlight is the series of self-portraits, presented in Italy for the first time, which Meyerowitz created daily during the lockdown period. Even in these more recent works, Joel Meyerowitz continues to demonstrate how photography serves as a profound medium for reflecting on individual and collective experiences, a tool for rediscovering the richness of the present in all its dimensions.
