The exhibition

Curated by: Margherita Magnino and Carolina Zani

From 16 March to 28 April 2024, as part of Testimoni, VII edition of the Brescia Photo Festival, Mo.Ca. – Centro per le Nuove Culture hosts a retrospective dedicated to Federico Garolla (1925-2012), documenting a style that, between the 1950s and 1960s, illuminated the path of many other photographers.

The exhibition, curated by Margherita Magnino and Carolina Zani, presents a series of photographs, including a dozen previously unpublished ones, in which great theatre actors, rising television stars, models, artists but also ordinary people take part, like actors on stage, in the set of a film studio.

Garolla was one of the first to bring the clothes from the most prestigious ateliers into the streets early in the morning, into the urban suburbs still free from car traffic, on the steps of a deserted Rome, and also in unexpected contexts. His idea of glamour is based on the comparison between dissonant images, on aesthetic antitheses and unequivocal class divisions. Nothing is left to chance, but everything appears casual, sophisticatedly casual and perfectly orchestrated. Garolla’s work is placed in a dimension, in line with Cartier-Bresson and Avedon, in which the subject reflects the ‘world of an era’ and the distinctive style of its author.
