At the Museo di Santa Giulia, from 24 September 2024 to 2 March 2025, as part of Testimoni, 7th edition of the Brescia Photo Festival, the Municipality of Brescia and Fondazione Brescia Musei present a solo exhibition by Massimo Sestini.
The exhibition, curated by Angelo Bucarelli, recounts the transformation of our country through the eyes of the artist, a unique figure of contemporary international photography and 2015 World Press Award winner.
The title of the exhibition, Zenit della fotografia, refers to Massimo Sestini’s ability, before the advent of drones, to recognise the intrinsic power of aerial and acrobatic photography of which he has become one of the undisputed masters, exploring unusual angles and viewpoints.
Specifically, 35 large-format images and about 50 back-stage and in-depth photographs will be exhibited, in a thoughtful selection of the artist’s work, focusing on themes dear to his heart, such as immigration and the main episodes in contemporary Italian history: the Capaci massacre, the Costa Concordia shipwreck, the L’Aquila earthquake, the Moby Prince tragedy, John Paul II’s funeral, Benedict XVI’s funeral and much more.
The extraordinary aerial images, which have made the photographer recognisable throughout the world, will be exhibited in a site-specific installation at the Museo di Santa Giulia: an architectural and artistic context of the utmost value that thus enhances Massimo Sestini’s shots.
The exhibition also features an unpublished photograph dedicated to Brescia, taken by Massimo Sestini especially for this event, which pays homage to two icons of the city: Brixia Roman Brescia Archaeological Park and the 1000 Miglia. The project, realised last 11 June, on the day of the start of one of the most fascinating car races in the world, availed itself of the collaboration of the 1000 Miglia itself and Guardia di Finanza.
Freccianera Fratelli Berlucchi
The exhibition ZENIT DELLA FOTOGRAFIA will be further developed also in Borgonato di Corte Franca (BS), where a section of the monographic exhibition will be set up from 22 October in the spaces of the historical wine cellar of Freccianera Fratelli Berlucchi, main sponsor of the exhibition and already partner of Fondazione Brescia Musei also in the realisation of the exhibition Gabriele Micalizzi. Legacy. Matter-History-Identity. Two exhibitions that run parallel – Micalizzi is also on display in the Sala dell’Affresco of the Museo di Santa Giulia until 2 March 2025 – and that testify to two different and complementary ways of being a photojournalist: extreme, in war, Gabriele Micalizzi, tightrope walker, Massimo Sestini.
