From 17 January 2023 to 06 June 2023
It begins with Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia and a successful exchange of masterpieces with Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, the first stage of the 2023 PTM A/R project, which will enrich the palimpsest of exhibitions of the Italian Capital of Culture year together with the permanent collections.
The exhibition
An initiative promoted by:
Municipality of Brescia, Fondazione Brescia Musei, Alleanza Cultura
In collaboration with: Accademia Carrara
Curated by: Roberta D’Adda
Texts by: Nicola Turati
The masterpiece on display, a work by Giovanni Busi, known as Cariani (1485/1490 – post 1547), is the Madonna and Child with Saints Alexander, Helen, Mary Magdalene, Anne, Joseph (Joachim), John the Baptist, Francis of Assisi, John, better known as the Invention of the Cross.
The painting is the guest of honour in Room VI, alongside artists such as Lotto and Moretto, and temporarily takes the place of the masterpiece from the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo: Adoration of the Shepherds (c. 1540) by Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo (1480 – post 1548), which is on its way to Bergamo.
A virtuous exchange that offers an original glimpse of the great Renaissance painting season between Bergamo and Brescia, capable of offering new points of view on the importance of dialogue and the movement of artists in the area, artists who lived, studied, knew and created between these and other neighbouring cities.
