Opening alongside the Festival Internazionale dell’Educazione (International Education Festival), this exhibition presents a never-displayed-before selection from the vast archive of illustration sketches of Editrice La Scuola – a Brescia-based publishing house active in the Italian education sector since 1904, publishing school textbooks and teaching tools that have accompanied generations of teachers and students of all school levels.
Through a curated selection of over 70 works, the exhibition offers a window onto the visual imagery that shaped the imagination the young Italians during the post-war years and economic boom, at the threshold of the more recent contemporary age. A visual imagery evoking new worlds to discover through space exploration, new journeys to distant peoples and cultures, and stories yet to be written by the eager post-war generation.
The exhibitions
Organised in four thematic sections, the show presents works by artists such as Benito Jacovitti, Bruno Munari, Ugo Fontana, Francesco Carlo Salodini, Marina Battigelli, Gianmaria Ciferri, Gianbattista Bertelli, Piero Cozzaglio, Nevio Zeccara, Gianni De Luca and Pio Pullini.
For its comprehensiveness, variety, and educational focus, the show offers an extraordinary journey through Italian creativity, attesting the talent of a national illustration tradition which alongside the Belgian and Argentine schools has shaped the history of the ninth art.
