From Roberto Longhi’s early writings onwards, the Brescian Renaissance school has gained its own role in the history of Italian painting. The exhibition ‘The Renaissance in Brescia. Moretto, Romanino, Savoldo. 1512-1552′ outlines a broad background context, in which painting becomes the mirror and synthesis of a complex system of relationships, ideas, charismatic figures and facts, and from which the spirit of an entire era emerges.
In the exhibition, paintings by Moretto, Romanino and Savoldo – supreme interpreters of that season – find an unprecedented counterpart in a selection of books and precious objects, which contribute to enriching the story by introducing original themes and dialogues. The choice has focused mainly on major national and international museum collections, while the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, the museums and churches of the city and the territory are intended as a natural complement and continuation of the exhibition itinerary, together with some public spaces that were the scene of major events in the city’s history.

The invitation – addressed to the people of Brescia and to the tourists who increasingly choose Brescia and its treasures – is to discover those exceptional decades by visiting not only the exhibition, but also the museums, churches, palaces, squares and streets that preserve the memory of that extraordinary season.
